ChessGPT is a free online chess game where you play against GPT-4o, the AI model behind ChatGPT, directly in your browser. No download or account is required. The game is built with chess.js and uses OpenAI's API to generate moves in Standard Algebraic Notation. Beat ChessGPT in normal mode to unlock hard mode, where the AI switches to Stockfish running at depth 15 — one of the strongest open-source chess engines available. A global leaderboard tracks weekly, monthly, and all-time results.
Visit chessgpt.ai, click "Game on", and play white against ChessGPT (which plays black). Moves are made by dragging or clicking pieces. After each game you can submit your result — win, loss, or draw — to the leaderboard. Hard mode is unlocked permanently in your browser once you beat the AI.
